Evangelism: Mission & Scope (PC1001) Core, 24.0 Credits

About SMEA

Welcome to St Mark Evangelism Academy (MEA) Service. This service began in 2017 as a twenty-week program based initially on the St. Paul School for Servants by Fr. Daoud Lamae, with a mission of helping church members identify service needs in the community and prepare them to address those needs.

St Mark's Academy helps young servants deepen their understanding of the Orthodox Christian faith and prepares them to witness Christ in their home, school, work, community, or anywhere else.

MEA offers units in evangelism, theology, biblical studies, church history, apologetics, and many other beneficial units taught from an Orthodox perspective. The educational units offered are tailored for servants, young parents, and anyone who is interested in witnessing for Christ to prepare them to be “ready to give a defense to everyone who asks (them) for a reason for the hope that is in (them)” (1 Peter 3:15).

We invite you to become part of our MEA community, not just to study but also to become an active servant and join one of the associated community service programs.

Content

This unit explores the true meaning of Evangelism by comparing the contemporary understanding of Evangelism with the Christian Orthodox Theology of mission. The unit will critically examine the Biblical and Liturgical bases on which evangelism is based. The unit will address general Western criticism towards the missionary role of the Coptic Orthodox Church while highlighting the various obstacles and barriers that could be slowing evangelism and mission efforts in our churches and communities. This module encourages discussing ways to improve and enhance the missionary role of the church by introducing concepts such as welcoming congregation and borderland evangelism.
